LONG BRANCH,
MKI, MIK* 330,000 units Brit
only.
Stevens
MKI, MKI* may be marked US Property 1,196,710 units.
NO.4 MKI(T) Sniper with NO.32 MK3 scope & cheekpiece.
RSAF ENFIELD 1,403, BSA Shirley 100, Holland & Holland 26,442.
The RSAF, ENFIELD units were the first NO.4's ever made. The
Holland & Holland units were made by virtually all contractors, and
merely converted by Holland & Holland. The Shirley units were made
by Shirley.
NO.4 MKI*(T) Sniper, of the same specs, was made by Long Branch
1,099 made. These were done at Long Branch. It is held that these
Long Branch NO.4 T's are the best ones made.
The NO.5 MKI,MKII,AKA the Jungle Carbine, was made by:
BSA Shirley 81,330 units.
Fazakerly 169,810 units.
Obsolete by 1947, this carbine suffered a wandering zero, and
excessive recoil. It looked a lot better than it was. As an aside, this
rifle is exactly the same length as a 94 Winchester Carbine, and
nearly the same weight, which would explain the recoil and ferocious
muzzle blast, as the 303 is burning a lot more powder than the 30-30.
Victoria Trading is advertising NO.5 Carbines dated well after 1946.
I think these must be FTR Carbines, or units made in "the Colonies"
out of NO.4 rifles.
Leading Particulars on the NO.5:
Overall length _____ 39.5 Inches
Barrel length ______ 18.7 Inches including flash hider
Weight __________ 7.15 Pounds 8.15 with bayonet
Rear sight ________ Adjustable peep to 800 yds
Front sight ________ Barley corn, wing protected
Capacity _________ 10 rounds, stripper loaded
These are the last of the NO.4 rifles:
NO.4 MKII has the trigger pivoted on the receiver rather than on the
trigger plate. Some were made this way by the ROF's through a
redesign of the butt sucket forging, and some were retrofitted by
adding a weldment to the butt socket. These were made from other
NO.4 Marks as follows.
